  1. Dear Harris,

I revisited Malacca recently, this time with my children - did the heritage trail (my own version), to try to kindle some interest in them on our rich history and heritage.

A special interest is the Portuguese fort (or what's left of it) - I've always been fascinated with what it could have looked like today, if the British didn't demolish it in 1824. The closest facsimile are probably the old Portuguese forts in India and Africa, which are better preserved or in better condition.

I've always wondered about its scale and layout in relation to the maritime approach from the sea, and how it was constructed to guard the river mouth.

Do you happen to have done any over-mapping of the known fortress plans (whether Portuguese or Dutch or British sources) against the present-day map of the same locale? If so, could you kindly consider sharing it with me (and my children). We'll definitely make another trip there to trace out the fort perimeter (with an enriched imagination) and this would be an interesting exercise indeed.

    Thank you.
